THE CHILDREN'S MUSIC DISCOVERY SERIES
(HOOKED ON CLASSICS!)

The effect is recognizable by the light gleaming in their eager eyes.  You can tell  a bit of knowledge has just been acquired, an understanding where none existed before. Perhaps it comes from seeing a violin up close for the first time, or hearing the contrast between a trumpet and a trombone, or knowing why a sonata is different from a concerto.

These are among the many rewards of The Desert Symphony’s “Children’s Music Discovery Series (Hooked On Classics)”—foremost rewarding the children, of course, but also the orchestra’s supporters, leaders and members who are moved by the experience.  Held in Palm Desert, it is performed  by renowned professional musicians and features an outstanding young guest artist who receives a music scholarship from the Symphony.

In an era when arts education has been diminished in public schools curriculums, filling that void is incumbent upon arts organizations and others who understand the proven correlation between an appreciation of the arts—visual, performing or musical—and other learning skills.  With the Children’s Music Discovery Series, The Desert Symphony is a part of this vital process.  And you can help.

The mission of The Desert Symphony is to enhance and enrich the cultural life of the Coachella Valley.  Our mission, though, cannot be limited to those who can afford the price of a ticket.  It must as surely impact those who may be the least likely to hear, feel and be thrilled by great music.

As many as 1,100 young school children attend the Children's Music Discovery Series. For most, it is likely the first time they have set foot in a theatre, much less heard live a powerful symphony orchestra.  This is an impressive number considered alone, but in reality a small fraction of the children attending grade schools throughout the desert each year.

Our dream is to expand the Children’s Music Discovery Series so that someday soon we might greatly increase the number of children attending the performances, and while are actively seeking support from a variety of foundations for this purpose, the importance of individual giving cannot be overstated.

Please consider making a gift to The Desert Symphony to support this initiative to open more little hearts and minds to the wonders of symphonic music. We hope you will consider that such a contribution might very well inspire deserving children to aim a little higher, and dream bigger dreams.  For after all, when we nurture the dreams of our children, we are also nurturing our own dreams for them.
