THE CHILDREN'S MUSIC DISCOVERY SERIES

The Concert Was Held on:
11 a.m. Friday, April 16
At the McCallum Theatre
7300 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert

This was a rare opportunity for our members and friends to experience how The Desert Symphony introduces Coachella Valley school children to the wonders of classical music.  The concert featured our 2010 scholarship recipient, 9 year old Umi Garrett, who performed Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 23 and the Symphony performed  program to delight our young audience.

9-year-old pianist shines at McCallum

The Desert Sun • April 17, 2010

More than 1,000 students from across the Coachella Valley were treated to a free symphony concert Friday at the McCallum Theatre.

The students listened to the Desert Symphony and also heard from 9-year-old piano prodigy Umi Garrett.

“We thought it would be great to bring in Umi and show these children what people their age can do with an instrument,” said Nancy Tapick, president of the symphony board.

“It brings it home to the children that they too can pick up an instrument and learn it and become artists.”

The concert was part of the 20-year-old Children's Music Discovery Series, funded by donations and sponsors.

The organization's “Bucks for Busses” campaign helped raise money to transport the students from the valley's three public school districts.
